Curriculum

Ambito di ricerca: la fisiologia e lo sviluppo delle sinapsi del sistema nervoso centrale e periferico. Particolare interesse e' rivolto ai meccanismi di competizione sinaptica durante lo sviluppo, e alla plasticita' sinaptica nell'adulto. La ricerca e' svolta con tecniche elettrofisiologiche (intracellulare e patch-clamp), su preparati in vitro ed in vivo. Risultati di maggior rilievo: 1) dimostrazione sperimentale dell'importanza del pattern di attivazione motoneuronale nel determinare il processo di competizione ed eliminazione sinaptica durante lo sviluppo dell'innervazione muscolare; 2) scoperta che i motoneuroni che innarvano un dato muscolo hanno, alla nascita, attivita' di scarica (potenziali d'azione) altamente sincrona tra di loro. Nel corso dei primi 15 gg di vita (nel ratto), l'attivita' di scarica acquista il carattere asincrono tipico dell'animale maturo. Questa scoperta riveste particolare importanza nello spiegare il meccanismo di competizione ed eliminazione sinaptica; 3) dimostrazione sperimentale che le cosi' dette "sinapsi silenti" sono tali per mancanza di espressione di recettori glutammatergici di tipo AMPA.
Insegnamento: attualmente insegna la Fisiologia Umana al corso di laurea in Odontoiatria

Research: physiology and development  of synapses both in the central and in the peripheral nervous system.  Focus on the mechanisms of synaptic competition and elimination during development, and on the synaptic plasticity in the adult. Intracellular and patch-clamp electrophysiological techniques. Relevant findings: experimental demonstration of the importance of pattern of electric activity of motoneurons in determining the competitive outcome during the developmental process of synaptic elimination; 2) demonstration that motoneurons’ firing activity is highly synchronous at birth, and become asynchronous within 2 weeks from birth. This finding is of relevance in the process of synaptic competition. 3) experimental demonstration that the so called “silent synapses” lack of glutamatergic AMPA-type receptors.
